A good move starts weeks before the truck arrives. Use this checklist to stay on track and avoid last-minute panic.
6β8 weeks before
- Book your removalist early, especially for weekends and end of month
- Declutter room by room β sell, donate or bin what you do not need
- Measure big furniture and check it will fit in the new place
- Start collecting boxes and packing materials
3β4 weeks before
- Update your address with banks, your employer, insurers and subscriptions
- Arrange connection of electricity, gas and internet at the new home
- Start packing rooms you rarely use
- Book lifts or loading docks if you live in an apartment
1 week before
- Confirm moving day time and both addresses with your removalist
- Defrost and clean the fridge
- Pack an essentials box: chargers, medication, toiletries, kettle, snacks
- Label every box with its room and contents
Moving day
- Keep valuables and documents with you
- Walk through the old home before the truck leaves
- Check meter readings and take photos
- Tell the movers where each roomβs items should go
Perth-specific tips
- In summer, book an early start to avoid moving in the afternoon heat
- Check bond-cleaning and final inspection dates if you are renting
- Book apartment lifts and loading bays through strata as early as possible
- Avoid the end-of-month rush if your dates are flexible β mid-month moves are easier to book
After the move
Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first so you can eat and sleep comfortably, check that utilities are connected, and walk through the old home one last time for anything left behind. Keep receipts for moving costs β if your move is for work, some costs may be tax-deductible, so check with your accountant.
