Moving house is a big change for children and pets. A little planning keeps everyone safe on moving day and helps the whole family settle into the new home faster.
Before moving day
- Talk to kids early about the move and let them help pack a box of their own things
- Keep bedtime and mealtime routines as normal as possible
- Update your pet’s microchip details with your new address
- Check whether your new council needs dogs or cats registered
On moving day
With trucks, open doors and heavy furniture moving in and out, the safest place for young children and pets is away from the action. If you can, arrange for a family member or friend to look after them, or keep them in one closed room with water, toys and familiar bedding. Perth summers get very hot, so never leave pets in a car.
Pack an essentials bag
- Snacks, drinks, medication and a change of clothes
- Favourite toys, books and a tablet for the kids
- Pet food, bowls, lead, litter tray and bedding
- Chargers, toilet paper and basic cleaning supplies
Settling into the new home
Set up the kids’ rooms and the pet’s bed first so they have a familiar space straight away. Keep cats indoors for the first couple of weeks and walk dogs around the new street on a lead until they learn the area.
